Gender Equality: We can’t solve Climate Change without Empowering Women

We are overlooking the SDG that can save the climate – Gender Equality

We are in an immense time constraint against climate change. The latest installation in New York’s building facing the Union Square counts the time we have left to curb down the green gas emission. This has again attracted the focus of the global population to protect the earth as they were earlier distracted with the Pandemic. India has been lacking as of now on its pledge in the Paris Agreement 2015. It can be easily achieved by following the UN sustainable development goals, which are extremely significant to combat global warming. However, India currently lacks majorly on the fifth point of SDG’s – achieving Women Empowerment and Gender Equality. Here is how women’s empowerment can halt the world, which is running fast towards climatic destruction.

Gender Equality: We can’t solve Climate Change without Empowering Women

Women have been at the forefront whenever any difficulty has risen for their family. The limitation of the assets owned by women, mostly from poor backgrounds makes them extremely vulnerable as climate changes rapidly. For example – It’s always been women travelling far to collect water, and as water bodies dry out, they have to walk a greater distance, hence leaving behind lesser time for them that can be utilised in learning or leisure. The unfair status of women doesn’t allow them to express their opinions at a community level which has trained them to resolve their difficulties in silence. Through these learnings generations, after generations have made the women an excellent problem resolver through the resources available.

Another example of the heightened vulnerability of women when they face the danger of economic instability and lack of shelter during natural disasters like flood or drought that affect the crops. As they face these challenges directly, they are a prominent resource that is well-equipped to help everyone speed up their task of saving the earth efficiently. Although the resource remains untapped. On the national and international front, women have shown remarkable resilience by holding traditional farming methods, being founders of non-profitable cooperatives, entrepreneurs, decision makers, scientists and innovators with respect to natural energy.

We cannot merely accept the facts and the cultural norms; we need to challenge them and provide women with education, a say in the community decisions, and the support to work alongside the fellow members of the society. It’s vital to appoint women in the decision-making committee, where she represents the difficulties and issues that women face due to climate change. Along with that, small steps should be taken to break the strict designation in the household. Once in awhile, men should experience the daily routine of women which will help the male counterparts to learn directly and understand the root cause of the problem. The collective effort will make the whole process quite efficient for society at large.

The world belongs to everyone, and the responsibility to save this world should be balanced by everyone as well, irrespective of their gender. When many hands come together, even the most massive weight is lifted easily. Earth needs us, and it’s time to promote each human to their part and save the environment. We, at Chandigarh Girl Up Club, take a pledge to keep our planet healthy for our future generations – to live, play, and thrive in.
